THE CHALLENGE

Curtiss Wright needed a below-grade pit built into the existing concrete floor of its Cleveland facility to receive a new conveyor system arriving on a fixed delivery date. The pit had to be cut, excavated, formed, poured, and fully cured before the equipment showed up — no room in the schedule for a miss.

The constraints made it interesting: the facility stayed in full operation throughout, so dust and wet slurry from concrete cutting had to be completely contained; the finished surfaces had to meet ACI flatness standards so equipment grating would sit flush; and the pit walls needed embedded steel angle, precisely set, to carry the grating

OUR APPROACH

Contained cutting in a live facility.

The crew enclosed the work area in plastic containment before saw-cutting the slab, vacuuming and squeegeeing slurry as they cut.
Production around the work zone never stopped.

Precision layout.

After excavation and haul-off, the crew placed a compacted stone base and set forms with a transit and laser — holding elevation to within 1/16 inch over 24 feet to meet ACI flatness requirements.

Off-site fabrication.

Wall forms were prefabricated at our shop, and the embedded steel angle was cut, drilled, countersunk, and degreased off site — so every piece arrived ready to set, keeping on-site time in the client's facility to a minimum.

Built to last.

The new walls were doweled and hook-bolted into the existing slab and reinforced with rebar, then poured, finished, and sealed in sequence with the pit floor.

Detail-driven finish.

After stripping forms, the crew mechanically anchored the steel angles, patched and ground every surface flush, and applied a feather-finish coat for a clean final product.

THE RESULTS

1. Field work wrapped in under four weeks — inside the window promised in the proposal — leaving the concrete time to cure before the conveyor arrived.

2. Elevation held to within 1/16 inch over 24 feet, ready for flush grating installation.

3. The facility stayed fully operational for the entire project, with zero disruption from dust or slurry.

4. Delivered at the fixed proposal price with zero change orders.
